Scissors kick 交叉步(登踏步)
A movement used to generate additional power when hitting overhand shots; similar to the hitch kick except that the feet move closer to each other while in midair but without passing each other.
Second server 第二发球者
In doubles, the partner who serves last in each half-inning, after his or her partner has lost their serve.
Serve 发球
The shot used to put the shuttle into play at the start of each point.
Service court 发球区
Area into which the serve must be delivered. A serve may be made to the right or left service court, depending on the score.
Setting 加分决胜负
The method of extending a tied game by increasing the number of points necessary to win. The player reaching the tied score first (always the receiver) has he option of setting, or continuing to 15 points without setting (or 11 points for women’s singles).
Shaft 球拍的中杆
The part of the racquet between the head and the grip.
Short-service line 短发球线(前发球线)
The line 6 ½ feet from, and parallel to, the net. A serve must land on or behind it to be legal.
Shuffle steps 垫步
A series of short steps in which the feet never cross each other; the technique sued to move into position to hit a shuttle that cannot be reached with one long step.
Shuttlecock 羽毛球
Official name for a shuttle, or “bird”, the projectile that is stroked back and forth across the net by the players.
Side alleys 边区
Also called doubles alleys, the area between the singles and doubles side lines, 1 ½ feet wide on each side of the court. These areas are out of bounds in singles play, but in bounds in doubles play.
Sidearm 正手位的平抽
The stroking motion used to hit shots from near the forehand sideline when the shuttle is at about not-top height.
Side-by-side 平行站位
A doubles formation describing the positions of the two players, each defending one side of the court.
Side-out 交换发球权
Event that occurs when the server has lost the rally and the serve goes to the opponent or opponents on the other side of the net. In doubles (except in the first half of the first inning), a side-out occurs after both partners have served and lost their serves.
Sling 持球
Also called carry or throw. An illegal shot in which the shuttle is caught and held on the racquet during the execution of a stroke.
Smash 扣杀
An overhead shot hit forcefully at a steep downward angle; the primary offensive shot in badminton.
Strategy 战略战术
A general plan of attack, implemented by using a variety of specific tactics.
Supination 手腕和手臂的外旋
The outward turning of the wrist and forearm, which results in the palm facing upward; used to increase power on backhand shots.
T 球场上的T点位置
The intersection of the short-service line and the center line. Doubles serves are often aimed at this spot.
Tactics 战术
The combination of shot selection, shot placement, deception, and court positioning that is used to win a point, game, or match.
Techniques 技术技巧
Movements that produce effective and efficient form, both in moving about the court and in stroking the shuttle.
Thomas Cup 汤姆斯杯
The premier international men’s team competition, sponsored biennially by the IBF.
Throat 球拍的上接头处
That part of the racquet where the shaft joins the head.
Trajectory 飞行轨迹
The angle of a shuttle’s flight, either upward, flat, or downward.
Tumble 滚动
A shuttle that turns end-over-end in flight; especially desirable for an underhand drop shot or hairpin net return.
Uber Cup 尤伯杯
The premier international women’s team competition, sponsored biennially by the International Badminton Federation.
Underhand 下手球
Refers to a stroke executed as the racquet contacts the shuttle below waist level with a lifting motion, such as in executing a serve or a clear from near the net.
Unsight 发球时发球者的站法违例
In doubles, to stand in such a way that an opponent cannot see the serve being delivered. This is an obstruction, and it is illegal.
Up-and-back 前后站位
A doubles formation describing the positions of two partners; the basic attacking formation in doubles play. In mixed doubles the female usually plays the up position, and the male the back position.
World Badminton Federation (WBF) 世界羽毛球协会
The governing body that sponsors World Championship play for individuals; founded in 1977.
Wrist cock 闪腕
Also called wrist action. In forehand shots the wrist movement involves hyperextension, followed by extension and flexion; in bacdhand shots, flexion is followed by extension and hyperextension.
