BADMINTON GLOSSARY
Alley 边区与后区的缩写
Short for side alley (double alley) or back alley.
Around-the-head shot 侧身绕头顶击球
The use of an overhead forehand stroke to hit a shuttle that is on the backhand side of the body. The contact point is usually above the backhand shoulder and can result in a smash, clear, or drop shot.
Attacking clear 平高球
Also CALLED OFFENSIVE CLEAR. A shot with a lower, flatter trajectory than a defensive clear; used to get the shuttle quickly behind an opponent.
Attacking shot 攻击性击球
Any shot hit with a downward trajectory; includes smashes, half-smashes, and drives.
Back alley 后区
Area between the back boundary line and the long-service line for doubles, 21/2 feet in width.
Backcourt 后场
Also called rearcourt. The back 8 feet of the court, including the back alley.
Backhand 反手
Refers to all shots played on the non-racquet side of the body.
Back line 后场底线
Also called base line. Back boundary line at each end of the court, parallel to the net and the doubles long-service line.
Balk (发球违例)的假动作
An illegal movement before or during the service, intended to deceive an opponent into thinking that the serve is being made before it is actually delivered.
Base line 端线
Also called back line. See Back line.
Block 拦击
A type of shot executed by holding the racquet stationary in the path of a smashed shuttle so that it rebounds into the opponent’s court.
Butt 球拍抓手底部
The end of the grip farthest from the racquet head; it should be flush with the bottom of the hand when the racquet is being held.
Carry 持球
Also called a sling or a throw. An illegal tactic in which the shuttle is caught and held on the racquet during the execution of a stroke.
Center court 中场
Equidistant from the two sidelines, and midway between the net and the back boundary line. The base position is usually within a step or two of center court.
Clear 高远球
A shot hit high and near the opponent’s back boundary line. May be an attacking or defensive clear, depending on trajectory.
Cross-court 大斜角击球(对角线击球)
A shot hit diagonally away from the sideline nearest the shuttle.
Deception 假动作
The art of deceiving one’s opponent by feinting, or by disguising a shot’s direction and speed until the last moment.
Defense 防守
State of being under attack by one’s opponent; a style of play consisting mainly of drop shots and high clears.
Defensive clear 防守型高远球
A shot hit with a higher trajectory and deeper landing target than any other in badminton. Its purpose is to allow the player hitting it to regain court position before the opponent can make a return.
Double hit 连击球—两次击球
Contacting the shuttle twice in succession during the same shot or, if in doubles, both partners touching the shuttle in hitting return. It is a fault.
Down-the-line 压边线球
A shot hit parallel to the sidelines and near the closest sideline.
Drive 平快球
A fast and low shot that has a flat flight trajectory as it passes over the net.
Drive service 发平快球
A hard, quick serve with a flat trajectory; usually hit at the receiver’s racquet shoulder.
Drop shot 吊球
A shot hit so that it barely clears the net and falls rapidly in the opponent’s court between the net and the short-service line.
Extension 舒展挥拍(击球)
The act of straightening the elbow and/or wrist, which causes the racquet head to move faster than the arm and hand; a major source of power.
Face 球拍面
The strung surface of the racquet.
Fault 违例(犯规)
A violation of the rules that results in loss of serve, or loss of a point if receiving.
Feint 假动作
A movement made with the intent to deceive. Legal during rallies, but illegal during a serve, when it is called a balk.
Finesse 技巧性击球
To hit a shot with delicate touch, or to be clever or crafty in its placement, as opposed to using sheer power.
First Server 第一发球
In doubles, the player who serves first for a side during an inning.
Flexion 闪腕
The act of bending the wrist toward the inside of the forearm, thus increasing racquet-head speed; a major source of power, especially when smashing the shuttle.
Flick 弹击球
A quick wrist and forearm rotation that surprises an opponent by changing an apparently soft shot into a faster passing one; used primarily when serving from the backhand side in doubles.
Follow-through (挥拍击球后的)跟进动作
The part of the stroke that occurs after the racquet strikes the shuttle.
Footwork 步伐
Patterns of foot movement, both in preparing to it the shuttle and in returning to the base position.
Forecourt 前场
Also called frontcourt. The front third of the court, from the net to the short-service line, a distance of 6 feet 6 inches.
Game (比赛中的)每一局
In men’s singles and all doubles play, 15 points; in women’s singles, 11 points.
Game point 局点
Point which, if won by the server, ends the game.
Grip 球拍的抓手
That part of the racquet farthest from the head; it is wrapped with leather so it can be more safely and comfortably held in the hand during play.
Hairpin 发夹型吊球(直上直下型吊球)
A type of drop shot hit from below net level and very close the net so that the shuttle rises vertically, barely clears the net, and tumbles sharply down the other side.
Half-smash 点杀
An overhead shot hit at a steep downward angle, but with little force, so it lands in the frontcourt; used deceptively when the opponent is expecting a smash.
